1000 DRUMS FOR SOLIDARITY and THE SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE Linking Global Struggles: Palestine Congo Sudan South Africa (Stilfontein) is a partnership between mehlo-maya (eye-to-the-sun); Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC); Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS); Wits University Action Committee (WUPAC); and Constitution Hill.
1000 DRUMS FOR SOLIDARITY focuses on the geopolitical links between the struggles in Palestine, and on our continent in Congo, Sudan, and South Africa (Stilfontein). Our drums will speak loudly across the sky – we will be the 1000 DRUMS FOR SOLIDARITY.
We call 1000 people to join us on South African Human Rights Day Thursday 21 March at Constitution Hill from 9:30am to 11:30am. A drum awaits you – you need not be an experienced drummer!
THE SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE – Linking Global Struggles takes place on FRIDAY 21 MARCH @ 13:30pm to 15:30pm and SATURDAY 22 MARCH @10:00am to 16:00pm in Conference Room 2 at the Women’s Jail, Constitution Hill.
Against the backdrop of ongoing challenges and shifting global political landscapes, participants will engage in thought-provoking discussions exploring the current situation in Palestine, and drawing the interconnectivity between conflicts on our own continent, in particular Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and South Africa (Stilfontein).
Recognising that Palestine is an anti-colonial struggle against a colonising and occupying power; and the DRC and Sudan are post-colonial struggles against local and occupying forces, the conference will examine historical contexts and contemporary realities in the different contexts. The aim is to shed light on the interconnections and implications of local and international destructive forces; and the need for civil society to build solidarity.
This means addressing colonial legacies in these countries, as well as the rapacious neoliberal global economic order. Critical also, is the economic disparity in South Africa in political and institutional life of the community, and the conception of citizenship.
The Conference will reaffirm the necessity of standing in unity with the struggles on our continent in the quest for justice, human rights, and self-determination.
Speakers at THE SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE include Prof Suren Pillay is the A C Jordan Chair and Director of the Centre for African Studies at UCT, Shomari Mukandjwa, Chairperson of EMMSA, Member of Kivu Ni Yetu and Spokesperson of Congolese Solidarity Campaign, Prof Amira Osman Sudanese/South African Architect and Chair in Spatial Transformation based at the Tshwane University of Technology, Prof Salim Vally NRF SARCHI Chair in Community, Adult and Workers Education at UJ and member of the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign Gauteng; Prof Noor Nieftagodien Head of History Workshop at Wits, and speakers from mining affected communities in South Africa.
