It’s official – Kelly Khumalo will be joining Unathi and Randall for this Sunday’s judging duties. Kelly is no stranger to DStv viewers – Showmax’ award-winning Life with Kelly Khumalo has provided viewers with a glimpse into her private life. “Private” is perhaps a relative term, here – Kelly has been a household name since she was 21, has won the SAMA for Best Female Artist and has sold millions of albums over the course of her career.
The series lays bare some of the most intimate details of her life – her romantic relationships, her relationship with her sister and mother, her therapy sessions: there are few South Africans with a personal life that is quite so public. However, it is her musical track record that makes Kelly a fitting guest judge for Idols SA.
Her debut album, T.K.O. shot her to fame and earned her numerous accolades amongst the Afro Pop elite, and her subsequent albums like The Past, The Present, The Future and The Voice of Africa have earned her multiple SAMA nods. Her musical career – 16 years in the making – continues to attract attention from fans and critics, alike – longevity that is hard to achieve in modern times.
Exactly how her unique experience will come to bear this Sunday is anybody’s guess – Kelly Khumalo has never been someone who can be described as “predictable”. What we do know is that she has plenty of advice to give, and we can’t wait to see what it will be.
