South Africa’s funniest doctor Riaad Moosa returns to the big screen in ‘New Material’. The sequel to the hugely popular, award-winning ‘Material’ (2012), opens in cinemas nationwide on 26 November.
One of South Africa’s most charming and best-loved comedians, Moosa was recently in the Netflix comedy special ‘Life Begins’, where he touches on turning 40, how spouses argue, local accents, negotiating with kids, and more.
With a growing international audience, Moosa also has several one-man shows under his belt, including ‘Strictly Halaal’, ‘For The Baracka’ and ‘Doctor’s Orders’, all instant hits.
He contracted Covid-19 at the end of 2020 and lost family members to the pandemic. But that has not stopped him.
During these chaotic and stressful pandemic times, Moosa launched a weekly virtual comedy club called ‘The Best Medicine’, featuring comedians from all over the world, and aimed at creating opportunities to heal through humour, laughter and many weird and wonderful therapies.
In typical Moosa fashion, one of his routines was titled ‘I got Covid for the Holidays’.
“Covid forced us to move the release of ‘New Material’ to November, and we are delighted to finally be able to release the film in cinemas in time for the festive season,
The cast is at the top of the comedy game, and the team behind the film are among South Africa’s best talent. What better way to see out the end of this challenging year than with some great laughs by our funniest comedians.”” says Helen Kuun, MD of Indigenous Film Distribution.
New Material also stars Vincent Ebrahim, Denise Newman, Carishma Basday, Zakeeya Patel, Kurt Schoonraad and Shashi Naidoo.
The film is directed by Craig Freimond (‘Material’, ‘Beyond the River), is produced by Robbie Thorpe (‘Material’, ‘Vaya’) and edited by Megan Gill (‘Official Secrets’, ‘Eye in the Sky’)
‘New Material’ is produced by Ochre Moving Pictures and Blu Blood Africa and is distributed by Indigenous Film Distribution.
