Sanlam Spreads Festive Cheer for 580 Elderly Community Members in Taung

Sanlam Retail Mass, in partnership with the Greater Taung Local Municipality, the regional South African Police Services (SAPS), the Reitlamile Service Club, and other community stakeholders, today handed over 580 food parcels to elderly residents in Taung. The initiative forms part of Sanlam’s continued commitment to enabling communities across South Africa to live with confidence.

The handover took place at the Taung Community Hall, where hundreds of elderly beneficiaries gathered for a “memorable and meaningful” morning of celebration, dignity, and care. The initiative is specifically designed to ease the financial burden during the upcoming holiday season and help ensure a warm and festive Christmas for local families, particularly those where grandparents are raising their grandchildren.

Speaking at the handover, Ms Virginia Nkosi, Executive for Stakeholder Management and Market Development at Sanlam Retail Mass, highlighted that what made this initiative unique was its community-led approach:

“This is not a project Sanlam arrived in Taung to define,” said Nkosi. “We were led by the elderly themselves, their needs and  lived realities. Working hand-in-hand with the municipality, SAPS and the Reitlamile Service Club, we asked the community what would make the biggest difference. They spoke and we listened. This is what care looks like: partnership, empathy and responding to people’s real needs.

For many beneficiaries, the hampers provide not only nourishment, but also relief, dignity, and renewed hope. Sanlam Retail Mass remains committed to supporting communities across South Africa through initiatives that honour people’s lived experiences and strengthen their ability to build financially confident futures.
